Restorative Yoga Workshop

Saturday 8th June 13.30 - 15.30 with Aslihan (Yoga Crow)
£20

Remember that feeling of being truly relaxed, the body all soft, warm, supple, and glowing? Feeling so comfortable in your own skin that you hardly notice your physical body?

Remember that feeling of your mind being laid back, sort of watching everything from a distance with a big smile on your face, knowing beyond a doubt that everything is okay, exactly as it is? In this state, you know that life is just as it is, that there is nothing to accept or reject.

Do you remember what it is like to rest in your true nature? Realize you are not separate from life, any more than the air in a balloon is different than the air surrounding it, or the wave separate from the sea." asks Esther Ekhart, the founder of Ekhart Yoga.

BENEFITS

Restorative yoga balances a hectic and stressful modern lifestyle and has an enormous capacity to heal physical and mental effects of everyday stress, and as we know, many diseases these days are stress related. Restorative yoga relaxes the body deeply and accelerates the body's natural healing process. During deep relaxation, all the systems of the body are benefited from the practice. Restorative yoga postures help us learn to relax our overstimulated mind and body and to rest deeply and completely to achieve physical, mental and emotional release.

With the use of specific restful poses and deep breathing techniques, practice stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which slows the heart rate and breath, increases blood flow to the vital organs, regulates the blood pressure and helps to improve the immune system. It promotes improvement in digestion, fertility, elimination and the reduction of muscle tension and general fatigue. The regular practice of restorative yoga has been found to reduce tension in the body and the autonomic symptoms of chronic stress such as anxiety, insomnia, headache, giddiness, chest pain, palpitations, sweating, digestive issues or abdominal pain.

This class suits everyone but it is especially helpful to those who are suffering from chronic stress related illnesses and those who are in need for emotional restorative support. It’s being especially popular with students who are recovering from illness or injury. You may leave the session feeling supported, grounded and connected.

This practice is great to balance an active yoga schedule or to give yourself a break when you feel under the weather, too.

************
HOW TO DO IT?

For Restorative yoga, the intention is to relax as far as possible into the postures, using as little physical effort as possible with the aid of props, without strain or pain. The mind focuses on the breath in order to cultivate mindfulness and release tension from the body. It is neither stretching nor strengthening practice but very much opening. It is a therapeutic form of yoga with the goal of conscious deep rest to facilitate rest & digest response of the body - the opposite of fight or flight response. Restorative yoga classes tend to be relaxing and slow paced, with a whole sequence using as few as five or six postures which are held for long periods of time. Props, like blocks, bolsters, blankets and straps are used so that you are supported in your pose comfortably. Gentle music may be played, and the practice may be combined with guided meditation.

*************

Resting is not a luxury or an optional privilege you have, it is essential for self-preservation and a manifestation of your respect to your unique life.

Gong Bath - Deep Relaxation

The Gong Bath is a deeply relaxing session, open to all levels; all you need to do is turn up, lay down and chill out! Then you will be ‘bathed’ in the vibrations of the gong. The gong has been used as a healing instrument for thousands of years within the East and is now being discovered in the West too. It is rapidly gaining in popularity due to its ability to take participants to a deeply relaxed space of both body and mind.

The Gong activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which takes the body into a natural state of balance or homeostasis which is very healing, participants report they sleep better after the gong and their mood is improved often for days afterwards, others have reported a release of emotional pain and mental blockages.

The Gong Bath is a deeply therapeutic event which will stay with you long after the last strike of the gong and will activate your body’s natural ability to heal and detox, while calming and soothing busy minds.

Balance Workshop Part Two

Life is a balance of holding and letting go...
Rumi

…and the same works for balancing poses (asanas). You have to learn when and which muscles to activate to hold the body in certain position but also let go of emotions that confines the body into certain habits.

The three essential elements to maintain the body stable are alignment, strength and attention. In this workshop, you will learn where your gravity centre is as you shift your body weight through the Earth Sequence and experience Lord Shiva’s gentle flow.
You will explore different ways of setting up 20 static poses that you may experience in your regular class and have the chance to use props such as yoga bricks or the studio barre to help build awareness on how your body moves and imprint the feeling for certain posture.

You will revisit the classic tree pose (Vrksasana) but with twists (literally!) and move onto many other balances that improve core stability so much needed as the body ages.

Visual aids will be used so you understand how we balance ourselves on the mental and psychic levels through breathing techniques (Pranayamas) and engage with our energy centres (Chakras).
This workshop is a place for you to ask questions and is suitable for all levels. Its content is different from the Balance Workshop delivered in February.

Tip before you come: have a light meal 3 hours before the workshop and bring a water bottle. All equipment needed is provided by Yoga Yoga.
